Minimizing Things for Maximizing Knowledge

“Wisdom is better than silver or gold.” -Lauryn Hill

I’ve never been concerned with expensive brands and status symbols. My 2001 Isuzu Rodeo is a means for going to work and carrying groceries home from the supermarket.  My meager home is a shelter for my protection from the outside elements. I shop for clothes at Target, and I my 19″ television has not seen a cable signal in over 2 years. I’m not implying that these things are all wastes of money; I’m just saying that they don’t appeal to me at this point in my life.

The dollars I’m about to spend on this backpacking experience could have purchased a new car or a closet-full of designer clothes. The cash could have gone towards tech gadgets, dining out 3 times daily, or playing golf every weekend (the last item was very hard to let go!) Nonetheless, I chose to save this money over the past 18 months, dollar-by-dollar, for the purpose of investing it into this journey.

My mind and spirit are prepared for the acquisition (and continual application) of more knowledge. I am seeking a elevated level of consciousness and recognize this is only be possible by moving away from the accumulation of more stuff…and towards the delayed gratification of higher wisdom.
